Formula SAE Update

To: Sponsors, Family, and Friends of the University of Alberta FSAE Team

Thank you for your continued support of the FSAE team. All the support we get from the University, industry, friends, and family is what makes our team possible. Though this year’s core Formula team was slightly smaller and less experienced in membership than our previous season, we are very proud of our accomplishments.

Every year is a fresh start; we design and build a new car from scratch. This season started in the fall of 2017 by establishing design roles of returning members and recruitment of new members. We quickly jumped into selecting team goals and designing a reliable and lightweight car within the allowed technical parameters. Throughout the winter we refined the design of new parts and actively salvaged components from the 2017 car. Spring brought us right into the final build; including machining, welding, painting, and testing among other manufacturing and calibrating processes. Thanks again to all our sponsors that contributed resources, time, services, knowledge and money, without this critical support we would not have been able to manufacture the 2018 car!

We selected to attend the Formula SAE Lincoln event and prepared ourselves for the 2400 km drive to Nebraska. Our car and team competed in the Formula SAE Lincoln event June 20-23, 2018 against 67 schools from around the world. We are proud to have come away from this competition at 7th overall in the Cost Event and advancing 16 places in the Design Event with the highest score in the team’s recent history.

The team also set a stretch goal to compete in the premier Formula Student competition, held in Hockenheim, Germany in early August. We were extremely close to competing overseas but due to logistical, timeline and financial constraints we were not able to attend. The final push to ship has left us with a performance car and a determined team.

For the remainder of the summer, Formula SAE will continue to gather data and test the car’s reliability at Castrol Raceway. Development of the 2019 Car will rely heavily on the next month of testing. Also, we are venturing into new territory by leading the initiative to develop relationships and organize events with the University of Calgary and other Western Canadian teams. This will give us another great opportunity to display our sponsors and showcase their valued partnership with our University of Alberta Formula SAE team.

Every single one of your contributions is meaningful; the tremendous learning and experiences your support has provided is immeasurable. We are always available to show-off the car at the University or bring it off-site to present. If you would like to know more, please do not hesitate to contact us at or at the numbers listed below.

On behalf of the 2018 Formula SAE team- thank you and we look forward to 2019 with you,
